History

The Kalavant Center's events include regular concert presentations and educational music workshops.

Concert Presentations

Since it's inception, The Kalavant Center for Music and Dance has produced only the highest standard of concert presentations, bringing in concert to New York City audiences the greatest musicians of India.
The Kalavant Center officially opened in New York City on September 12, 1998, with an inaugural concert in Cooper Union's Great Hall given by the late legendary sitar maestro Ustad Vilayat Khan, legendary sarangi maestro Ustad Sultan Khan, and tabla maestro Ustad Kadar Khan. The quality of musicians who committed their time and skill to this event shows the level of musicianship The Kalavant Center is committed to presenting to U.S. audiences. Furthermore, since that inaugural event, the Kalavant Center has presented in concert Pandit Jasraj, Ustad Rais Khan, Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Pandit Ulhas Kashalkar and Shri Anup Jalota.
In 2005, The Kalavant Center began presenting free concerts in New York City parks, as a community outreach effort, in hopes to bring greater awareness of the center's activities to the residents and visitors of New York. These presentations have been greatly received by both the public and media.


Music Workshops

The Kalavant Center also regularly conducts workshops on various subjects, including Indian classical vocal, sitar and tabla styles.
